San Diego, Part 1... The Zoo and La Jolla

We had a WONDERFUL time in San Diego. I could seriously get used to taking little vacations every weekend! Patrick keeps reminding me that we WILL be returning to 'real life' soon, but I think this trip has been a good reminder that there are always things to explore right in our own backyards. Virginia Beach MIGHT not be as cool as San Diego... but it's worth checking out! :)

Our trip started with a visit to the San Diego Zoo. I've always heard great things about this place and it didn't disappoint. We started out with a double-decker bus tour of the entire park... a great way to get a lay of the land and see just about all the animals.

After the tour, we walked back to our favorite animals to get a closer look. The biggest hits, by far, were the polar bears and the panda bear. I loved how close we could get to the animals. Annie especially loved the panda (and, of course, now has a stuffed panda and has quickly added the word to her vocabulary).

Another hit was the hippopotamus. The exhibit gave both the above ground and under water perspective.

Patrick couldn't resist a visit to the meerkats. Believe it or not, these little guys are the 'motivational symbol' of his company. Patrick says there are actually posters plastered along the hallways encouraging everyone to be more like the meerkats. Does that sound like something straight out of 'The Office' or what?

Annie also visited her first petting zoo here... and, not surprisingly, LOVED it! She fearlessly said hello, fed, and tried to kiss all the animals (...while I stood on the ready with a vat of Purell).

After a fun morning at the zoo, Annie and I headed back to the hotel for a nap and Patrick drove up to check out the Torrey Pines golf course. We then capped off the day by checking out beautiful La Jolla.

We dined al fresco overlooking the ocean and very much enjoyed the view, terrific seafood, and toasting a great day!

  3. Inga - I wish we had time to get up to San Fran... but I don't think that's a drive we're up to doing over a long weekend. I have done it on previous trips though - and it's beautiful! Carmel is one of my all-time favorite little towns. Did you ever visit when you were in CA?
